Muscliffe Free stretch- Barbel?

I fished this stretch hard since christmas, averaging 3 short evening sessions a week, and had some cracking chub sport, but i failed to even hook in 2 any Barbel. I have not seen this stretch in summer, but can someone tell me what sort of summer form it has for Barbel? Is there any particular swims that are better then others? And when the water is low (i.e normal summer conditions) is there much flow. I have fished throop for years but now want a different challange, but i would like to know if there is a big enough head of barbel in the free stretch to make it worth specifically targeting them. If so, what size do they run to? So many questions i know, but if you don't ask, you don't get i suppose. Many thanks, and i would apreciate all the help and advice that comes my way. Thanks again, DannyT

Avon Roach

Something I didn't realise until I read the Winter 2007 CAC Newsletter is that 87% of roach caught in a 2005 EA fish survey came either fromthe Salisbury area or from between the Royalty and Clay Pool. Seems an odd statistic for what was once generally our domiant speices and on a one time famed roach river at that. Also suggests the swim I have been meaning to try for roach at Cowards Marsh will be a dead loss. Any views on roach from the middle Avon? GG

Harrow Pond (CAC Club Water) in 2007

25/06/07 19:45 to 21:30 Almost a break in the rain, on the wettest June day since Noah launched his boat, I tried Harrow Pond for the first time. Hard to say what I made of it as in a short and gloomy session I didn’t really reconnoitre the venue but grabbed the swim nearest the car, which offered me some trees for cover from the rain and offered the fish some lily pads for cover. Laying on brought some small knocks and one half decent rudd, but then I switched to the lift and was faced with a pretty static float, until it disappeared without any warning; hardly a typical tench bite, but after a bit of a struggle, which involved hauling it out of the lilies at one stage (making me glad I’d scaled up to a size 10 hook and 8lb line) a 4lb 8oz tench was landed: my largest tench away from Everton Grange. That fish came on two grains of sweetcorn and after that I missed a bite on bacon grill. Is the tench from different venues challenge on for 2007? Saw a kingfisher btw. 02/05/07 20:15 to 21:40 Picked the same swim as last week, but a chap was just packing up and said he’d had a tough day and been plagued by pike. To be honest, with the weed and lilies, there aren’t a huge number of swims that are fishable. Float moved slightly sideways twice but no hittable bites and a pike was indeed scattering the silver fish. Wet and miserable – saw a kingfisher again. May try the other bank next time, or even consider raking a weedy swim! 03/08/07 19:30 to 21:30 Went with a two rod approach. The float line, to the lilly pads at the left margin, was static. Following the inactivity with the carp rod on Wednesday’s trip to the club lake I invested in some 8mm halibut pellets as loose fed and used a banded 14mm halibut pellet on the hook and aimed further out on the edge of the right hand lily pad. As the light disappeared the line started peeling of the carp rod at a rate of notes and after a struggle a 12lb carp was banked. Not a subtle approach but my biggest carp when actually targeting them!

Everton Grange in 2007

10/07/07 14:15 to 20:15 Went to Everton with Mickey Minnow on my compressed Tuesday. Weather stared grim but brightened up. Slow start and then two fish on sweetcorn, one just over and one just under the 4lb mark. Then it went quiet, although Mickey in the swim at the top of the island pulled out ten fish, mainly tench with the best about 4lb. Late on I lost something bigger when I tried to turn it as it headed for the island. Have standardised this season on a 4BB Stillwater blue fished lift style with a SSG two inches or so from the hook, the second tench gave a classic lift bite – I’ll look back on that one fondly when I’m on the nursing home! Probably fished for longer than I wanted too, but Mickey was going well. Quick pint in the Royal Oak – first Ringwood for ages! In retrospect I wonder if the size 8 was too large, especially as sweetcorn was the bait producing most interest, which is odd because by July I usually reckon the tench here have sussed sweetcorn as bait. Everton now has a resident Kingfisher. 27/07/07 18:45 to 21:00 With the Chief of Staff, the Assistant Chief of Staff and the Chip of the Old Block in Ireland, the pattern for the next week or so would be to get on with painting the house during the day and fishing in the evening. Fishing in the rain again: Sammy Stone-Loach at work had insisted come rain or shine he would be at Everton, so when I finished DIY for the day, I headed to Everton despite the rain, but of course he was nowhere to be seen. I groundbaited the swim at the top of the Island and then headed on to try the new lake for sodden hour during which I had two tench, the best weighing 3lb 8ozs. Then I moved to the swim I had baited and had a third tench. After a diversion when I helped the only other angler there land a 11lb carp in his ridiculously small landing net I had a tubby carp, which looked smaller than the 3lb it turned out to weigh. All four fish came to flake.

2007 trips to "Azelea" Club Pond!

Chris Still back filling your board with my 2007 trips. This is a club pond where club rules say no publicity! GG from "Somewhere in Dorset or Hampshire" 19/07/07: 20:00 to 20:30 Mickey Minnow and I had been planning to go back to Everton after work, but events worked against us, so after doing a few chores I went to a club lake late on, very much on a whim and hoping for one of the resident small tench to make it up to three venues for tench in 2007. I thought the weather was settled, but after 10 minutes I had to go back to the car to get a coat. Then I missed two lift bites and thought my chance had gone, but then the float sailed away and a half pound rudd was landed. The next rudd was three quarters of a pound and then I took a more typical sized rudd for this pond on the drop. This is an odd pond, I never expected to catch rudd that needed a landing net here, but two years or so back the Chip of the Old Block had a roach of over half a pound, I’ve had a four pound koi and a pound perch on bread crust, it is just a truly random fishery! 30/07/07: 19:15 to 21:15 Still hoping for one of this pond’s small tench, but after some small knocks, had a tiddly roach and then slipped the landing net under an 8oz roach. 04/08/07: 20:00 to 21:30 Even later getting out on the last evening before the family’s return. Tried a former favourite swim of mine: “Oak Tree Bay”. Which was so weeded up I stepped up to 8lb line and a size 10, virtually fishing in a hole in the lilies. The float bibbed and bobbed but I failed to hit anything, until I switched from the lift to laying on and that brought a small tench towards dusk. A new record of tench for me from four different venues in 2007; Harrow Pond, both lakes at Everton Grange and now here, beating the three venues in 2005 (Everton Main Lake, Ouse Old River at Newhaven and here). Now to crack Hatchett Pond’s tench in 2008. GG

Just back from two hours at the Bickerley Mill Stream. Started off by trotting just above the footbridge/ford for an hour; 4 dace, 1 chub (about a pound), I small roach, some bleak and a stickleback on caster! Then tried with the cage feeder in a swim I had chub from at the start of 2006, an hour of staring at a static tip until I missed a good bite on flake at the end. Hey ho! GG

Hi folks Anyone caught any trout in the lower Stour recently? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have fallen upon hard times recently, and am looking for free places to game fish to supress the depression. I am astounded by some of the prices being asked for in the area - up to £50 for three fish in some local places. I ended up going all the way to Tolpuddle Lakes for a reasonable £15 2fish limit. A difficult place to fish tho' Does anyone else feel a little priced out of the game fishing game? cheers

Muscliffe free stretch

Hi Guys & Gals My son has just started course fishing and he has been told that there is a "free stretch" at Muscliffe, ??? is this right, ???? He is at this time fishing near the Iford Tavern, has a rod licence but has been told he does not need to a day ticket to fish near to the road bridge going into Christchurch and the old bridge next to it. OK, here are the questions. As a bove is there a free stretch at Muscliffe and if so how far does this run. Is he OK to be fishing near the bridges by the Iford Tavern with only his rod licecence. Are there any other free stretches in the area, how long does the Muscliffe stretch run if this is true. Sorry for the questions but I looked at the fines on the Environment Agencies website and do not fancy coughing up £2,500, my son as you can guess is the only one in the family who wants to get into river fishing so any advise would be appreciated. Thanks GINGER-TAZ
