Chris

Still back filling your board with my 2007 trips.  This is a club pond where club rules say no publicity!

GG from "Somewhere in Dorset or Hampshire"

19/07/07: 20:00 to 20:30 Mickey Minnow and I had been planning to go back to Everton after work, but events worked against us, so after doing a few chores I went to a club lake late on, very much on a whim and hoping for one of the resident small tench to make it up to three venues for tench in 2007.  I thought the weather was settled, but after 10 minutes I had to go back to the car to get a coat.  Then I missed two lift bites and thought my chance had gone, but then the float sailed away and a half pound rudd was landed.  The next rudd was three quarters of a pound and then I took a more typical sized rudd for this pond on the drop.  This is an odd pond, I never expected to catch rudd that needed a landing net here, but two years or so back the Chip of the Old Block had  a roach of over half a pound, I’ve had a four pound koi and a pound perch on bread crust, it is just a truly random fishery! 30/07/07: 19:15 to 21:15 Still hoping for one of this pond’s small tench, but after some small knocks, had a tiddly roach and then slipped the landing net under an 8oz roach.    04/08/07: 20:00 to 21:30

Even later getting out on the last evening before the family’s return.  Tried a former favourite swim of mine: “Oak Tree Bay”. Which was so weeded up I stepped up to 8lb line and  a size 10, virtually fishing in a hole in the lilies.  The float bibbed and bobbed but I failed to hit anything, until I switched from the lift to laying on and that brought a small tench towards dusk.  A new record of tench for me from four different venues in 2007; Harrow Pond, both lakes at Everton Grange and now here, beating the three venues in 2005 (Everton Main Lake, Ouse Old River at Newhaven  and here).  Now to crack Hatchett Pond’s tench in 2008. GG

Sounds like you have been busy with your fishing trips this year, and if reading them and memory serves me well they sound more successful than last year.

I've had mixed fortunes to be honest: I'm reasonably happy on the tench and carp front, but whereas I might have hoped (dreamed) for some chub at the back end of the 2006/7 river season, water levels, time constraints and, yes, ability conspired against me.  From September onwards I've done okay, by my standards, trotting for dace, mainly at Bickerley.  Investing in a pair of chest waders has helped here, but in winter I would urge being very sure you know the river bed before stepping off the bank!

Where I have goofed up though is on the Tidal Stour, since joining CAC at the start of the year, I've tended to go the members only stretches (Meridians and above Iford Bridge) but to be honest I've done better in previous years from the day ticket stretches at Pony Fields, the Railway Bridge and Wick.  From next month onwards I intend getting back on those stretches, mainly targetting roach, but I'm convinced there are bream at Wick.  Incidentialy the CAC Winter News Letter suggests the Lower Stour roach fishing is as good now as it has been for years.  I feel I've missed out in 2007!

Overall the average time I get bankside is literally a couple of hours a week, so sucess is relative!

How has your year been?    Have you slid anymore of those double figure barbel into your net?

Have a good Christmas.

GG
