Avon Roach

Something I didn't realise until I read the Winter 2007 CAC Newsletter is that 87% of roach caught in a 2005 EA fish survey came either fromthe Salisbury area or from between the Royalty and Clay Pool.  Seems an odd statistic for what was once generally our domiant speices and on a one time famed roach river at that.  Also suggests the swim I have been meaning to try for roach at Cowards Marsh will be a dead loss.

Any views on roach from the middle Avon?

Strange report.  Not sure where you mean be the middle Avon, but last summer had success with them on the Severals RDAA stretch on the Avon at Ringwood.  In the past had caught on the Lifeland CAC end.

Maybe you ought to try what I saw today going by the Royalty stretch on the Avon, a guy fishing the field!  May be it was easier than fishing a very high and flooded Avon there...

Guess I meant between Sals and Christchurch by the middle Avon: i.e. the apparent barren roach stretches.  Good that you've disproved this theory though, certainly the Bickerley Mill Stream holds roach, although I've yet to connect with a sizeable example from there.  Fishing in a field:  I may as well have fished in my bath for all the good I did at the Pony Fields this p.m.!

The only 2 places between Salisbury and Christchurch I have tried on the Avon are RDAA waters (last tried them 2006).

One near Ibsley - I think CAC have a stretch next to it, I've fished twice to no avail on anything.  Though remember seeing some fish either roach or small chub.

Other at Shallows Farm where I have only caught small roach and chub from.  Bait I used there was always maggots.  So unless it has changed in the year I have my doubts on the report.
