Two club lakes south of Lyndhurst. One is a very small and weedy pool and the other larger and with open water and small lily pads. Very shallow and stocked with carp (mainly singles in the 2-4lb bracket, odd low doubles) eels and remarkably elusive roach. Good venue for surface fishing, often nothing more sophisticated that floating crust will do the trick here. Part of a camp site and therefore out of bounds in school holidays and often used for canoeing during the day
Not a dramatically early start, but with the Chip of the Old Block not having a cricket match this morning I pulled into the car park bang on seven, the official opening time for this venue. Faffed about a bit when setting up, for some reason the float wouldn’t cock when setting up on the lift method, so switched to laying on. Discovered I’d forgotten both my sweetcorn and to put milk in my thermos of tea – cracking start, especially as sweetcorn is my favoured bait here. Added to that the carp started to show on the surface, but as soon as I started to set up a second rod for floating crust the float went under. Missed a few bites, had two fish get off, but had two carp (one just under and one just over two pounds) on bacon grill before packing up at nine. Back home before I’d been missed!
