25/06/07 19:45 to 21:30 Almost a break in the rain, on the wettest June day since Noah launched his boat, I tried Harrow Pond for the first time.     Hard to say what I made of it as in a short and gloomy session I didn’t really reconnoitre the venue but grabbed the swim nearest the car, which offered me some trees for cover from the rain and offered the fish some lily pads for cover.  Laying on brought some small knocks and one half decent rudd, but then I switched to the lift and was faced with a pretty static float, until it disappeared without any warning; hardly a typical tench bite, but after a bit of a struggle, which involved hauling it out of the lilies at one stage (making me glad I’d scaled up to a size 10 hook and 8lb line) a 4lb 8oz tench was landed:  my largest tench away from Everton Grange.  That fish came on two grains of sweetcorn and after that I missed a bite on bacon grill.  Is the tench from different venues challenge on for 2007?  Saw a kingfisher btw.

02/05/07 20:15 to 21:40 Picked the same swim as last week, but a chap was just packing up and said he’d had a tough day and been plagued by pike.  To be honest, with the weed and lilies, there aren’t a huge number of swims that are fishable.  Float moved slightly sideways twice but no hittable bites and a pike was indeed scattering the silver fish.  Wet and miserable – saw a kingfisher again.  May try the other bank next time, or even consider raking a weedy swim!

03/08/07 19:30 to 21:30 Went with a two rod approach.  The float line, to the lilly pads at the left margin, was static. Following the inactivity with the carp rod on Wednesday’s trip to the club lake I invested in some 8mm halibut pellets as loose fed and used a banded 14mm halibut pellet on the hook and aimed further out on the edge of the right hand lily pad. As the light disappeared the line started peeling of the carp rod at a rate of notes and after a struggle a 12lb carp was banked.  Not a subtle approach but my biggest carp when actually targeting them!
