Word has it that Martin’s Farm Lake at Woodlands (near Verwood) is no longer a day ticket water and has been acquired by Ringwood DAA. This would kind of make sense cos Bill who used to sell the tickets from his porch, is not in the best of health and moved back to Devon to be near his daughter a year or two back.

It is a season or two since I’ve fished Woodlands, but it is a surprisingly deep lake, especially at the far end. The far bank can be a bit gloomy and I favoured the near bank swims opposite the Island. Reasonably reliable for high singles or low doubles; my Verwood fishing pal, Percy Pope, has had some good days there on ledgered bacon grill and sweetcorn and, unusually for a deeper water, surface fishing is well worth a try. Tench are present but elusive; I’ve only ever caught one although another of my friends, Billy Bitterling, once caught two in a session when he was down from London. That is about as good as we've known it for tench there!  There is good roach and rudd sport with loose fed maggot on the drop and I’ve seen fish to a pound caught on carp tactics. I had always meant to try one of the deeper swims in winter for perch. I’ve no proof but suspect some large stripeys lurk in the depths.

Interesting news, I guess if this is true that they will not be selling day tickets, unless there is a nearby baliff.

Seems like my source got it wrong, according to yesterday's Anglers Mail. Martins Farm at Woodlands is still a day ticket water. If so Chris I'll do a billy-do for  your locations page.

I've not heard anything from the RDAA about this water, so I assume the Mail is correct, any info once you've visited would be appreciated.

Perhaps the new water is in fact the Royalty.

As on the official RDAA site...

Ringwood and DAA are delighted to announce a conclusion to successful negotiations for exclusive club fishing rights on the famous Hampshire Avon Royalty fishery.

This marks the return to the Royalty after nearly 40 years for Ringwood and DAA and secures its place as one of the countries_ premier angling clubs offering members some of the finest fishing available in the UK.

20 coarse fishing tickets per day will be allocated to Ringwood and DAA members on a first come first served basis. When not pre-booked, club members will also be entitled to concessions for the famous Parlour, Compound and Bridge pools plus concessions on salmon and sea trout fishing.

These tickets together with non-member day tickets will be available from Davis Tackle.

To dispel the rumours of a _closed syndicate_ Ringwood and DAA have membership vacancies. Further information can be found on our web site: www.ringwoodfishing.co.uk

Alternatively, membership enquiries to: 01202 871496 or email: info@ringwoodfishing.co.uk

Chris

No in fairness my informant simply got it wrong, rather than confusing a farm lake dug circa twenty years ago with a river stretch with a known history stretching back to Norman times.

Even though I have never had a decent day on the Royalty and find it crowded and scenically dull, it is nevertheless interesting news about Ringwood acquiring this and another feather in their cap alongside Throop. I have been toying with shelling out for a Christchurch book and the news about the Royalty wont impact on that decision. There is still more than enough bank on offer from Christchurch for me, so it will still come down to if I can justify the cost to the Chief of Staff and whether I believe I’ll get enough time bankside to justify it to myself!
