Pellet fishing for roach

On a club lake in the NF I've been told banded 14mm pellet is working for better than average roach.  To be honest pellet is a new fangled bait to me, but can anyone recommend a brand or flavour of hookable pellet that may work for stillwater roach.  I'm thinking of loose feeding with with hemp, tares, sweetcorn and a few pellets (with sweetcorn and tares as change hook baits) am I on the right lines or not?

What's wrong with flake anyway?

Gary

14mm for roach seems rather large to me.  I use that size when I'm after carp and barbel.

I've used the "Dynamite" rang for these, which I drill and hair rig on for those fish.  I've never personally been impressed by the soft pellets myself.

For roach I'd still go for maggot / flake or sweetcorn still.

Chris

I cannot say I'm a fan of soft pellets based on using them once.  Being just a simple pleasure angler I cannot really see what soft pellets offer over paste.  Thanks for the tips on hard pellets, although I'm afraid I glazed over once I read the bit about drilling them and mentally raeched for a pinch of flake.

Me a dinosaur - no never?

Southern Angler isn’t a publication I generally buy, but faced with a couple of long train journeys this week, I’ve been reading virtually every magazine published. Riverside Lakes in Dorset are featured (which incidentally this is a venue a chap at work is raving about) and they recommend 6mm pellets fished over 4mm pellets for decent roach on the middle lake. Maybe there is something in this pellets for roach malarkey after all.

I still wonder why soft pellets should be any better than, bread flake or maggots...

In my more cynical moments with magazines I wonder if they get sponsered by the bait companies.

PS Thanks for mentioning this venue, I've now added it to my list.
